Project Tasks
To meet the above objective, the project team will work on a number of individual projects components:
- Define key environmental indicators through literature reviews. See Task 1.
- Review of the policies and regulations for the management of the coastal zone in the Kingdom. See Task 2.
- Characterize pollution threats to the Saudi Arabian coast from activities such as coastal construction, commercial fishing, aquaculture, oil exploration and transport and discharges from industrial activities, sewage treatment facilities, power generating and desalination plants, etc. See Task 3.
- Develop policies to manage pollution affecting the marine environment of Saudi Arabia and to guide Saudi Arabia’s effort to meet International commitments on controlling marine pollution. See Task 4.
- Conduct a field survey of designated priority areas to provide high-quality, up-to-date information on the environmental conditions of these areas. See Task 5.
- Design national Implementation Plans for Marine Coastal Initiative (IPMCI), which will be considered as a second phase of this project under the collaboration between KAUST and NCEC. See Task 6.
- Provide additional ad hoc advice and support to NCEC on coastal and marine environment issues. See Task 7.
In carrying out this work, the project team assembled by KAUST will devise the necessary plans and protocol, and supply the needed personnel, materials and all other required items. Throughout the project, the team will maintain close communication with NCEC to ensure that the developing strategies and work progress meet the needs of NCEC.
